Looks like the same issues that stopped the original Mini from continuing to come in will halt the Rocketman as well.
WOODSTOCK: Linda's 2005 LY MCSC with feel good graphics and go fast mods.
CINIMIN: Jack's 2006 Chili Red/White Coupe

Hmm.

If the Smart and the new Scion minicar can pass US and EU safety regulations, why not the Rocketman?

Well while the rocketman was a cool idea and had some neat features.  What Mini really needs is a few years of great reliability.  If they can be thought of as an excellent reliable car, they will really sell a ton of cars.  I think alot of people really like their look and performance but are scared away by poor track record of real expensive repairs.

This concept has been split down the middle on likes and dislike. I was a platform to put some new things out there to see how they would stick. BMW is putting big bucks into their carbon fiber mega city vehicle and I don't think they care to spend money developing two of the same thing. We all ready know that in the gen 3 Hardtop it will be sharing the same build platform as the 1 series.

Not sure how the reliability factor works into this, but they are as reliable as the BMW line. As far as part, in the gen 1s they share alot of similar engine parts as the neon and PTCruzer. The gen 2s the same goes with Citreon and Peugeot. Alot of the maintence parts are off the counter items . It will be interesting in 2013 to see the new 3 cylinder turboed engine that will be going into most of the new Minis.

If people are down because the Rocketman won't be, they should wait for the new GP

And I think the Paceman (smaller Countryman) is still in the mix...

I think it is yes and no Jack and don't forget we have the f56 mixed into this too.

Given BMW's record on turbocharged engines, I'm concerned about the longevity of a clean-sheet turbo design.

I would agree to some extent, except I don't think it is the turbo as much as it is thinking you get 7 to 10k out of the oil in a turbo engine. I see BMW finially figured out that the old oil charge cycle rate is not adequate. So one could say that is progress.
