First four months of driving in 1988: Plymouth Duster, Volkswagen Bug, Ford Monarch, Datsun pickkup. Don't know the years, but I paid $375 for the Bug and that was as much as I paid for the other 3 combined.

2- Opel Rekord 1980 or 81, Mercedes Sedan 1982, 2- Opel Manta 1988 and 1987, Honda Prelude 1980, GMC Sonoma 1995.

Not too many.

Driving in Europe is more fun!

1980 Datsun (Nissan for you youngsters) B210 (basic transportation but slightly better than walking); 1987 Mustang GT (my second favorite all-time after the Mini); 1985 BMW 325e; 1997 Chev Blazer (to haul dogs in); 1990 Chev 1-ton dually pick-up (to haul the horses with); 1980 International dump-truck (to haul the horse manure away with); 2004 Mini Cooper S, and my honorable mention … 2001 John Deere 4300 tractor.  Rich also had a 1971 Firebird which gave its life for him in a head-on in1985.  (we didn’t need airbags when cars were that heavy …)  We’ve still got everything but the Datsun, Mustang and Firebird.   When I was born, I was brought home from the hospital in my Dad’s Sunbeam, and some of my earliest memories are of watching racing at SIR and Spanaway Speedway … I hold my Dad totally responsible for this car thing.

I’ve been off the grid for a while, but I thought I would chime in here…

My lovely wife (LaFiesta Mini on this board) only had one car of her own before the MINI.  It was a Ford Escort appropriately called the “ghetto mobile”.  She finally crashed it enough times (in the NE winters) it went away.

The only vehicle that comes close to the MINI in the fun driving department is my Jeep Wrangler and the classic Minis.  The Jeep was a joy to drive as well, but a completely different ride but it was off-road ready, and I like that.

My list (in order of appearance):

1978 Datsun King Cab

1984 Capri (totaled after 1 month)

1992 Nissan 4x4

1995 Honda Del Sol

1980’s Classic Mini (2 each, one was right-hand drive)

1998 Jeep Wrangler

2001 BMW 325i

2004 MCS JCW

2004 MCS

The MINI is a great car-culture and after owning a couple classics I was excited to buy the new MINI.  When I got the MCS JCW we were supposed to get a second vehicle for the “family” as a second car, but after a couple of drives in the MINI she said, “I gotta have one of these”…and the rest is history.

SNARL

P.S.  I also drive a great number or G-cars and rentals regularly.  Driving a Mercedes through Berlin with a Polizei motorcycle escort at high speed a foot off the bumper of the lead vehicle was great!  But I digress…

Scream if you want to go faster!

I'll chime in here.  In chronological order:

1976 280Z 2+2 (Sold w/240,000 miles on it, original engine, trans, and clutch!!!)

1992 Toyota 4x4 Pickup (First new car)

1967 Chevrolet Camaro RS (actually made money when I sold it)

2000 Nissan Frontier CrewCab (For Sale now, the Mini is replacing it)

2005 Volkswagen Touareg V8 (Good grief!! It's got grunt!)

Not as many cars as some of you, but I can honestly say they've all been great cars, not a bad egg in the bunch.

Ok.  Let's see if I can do this.  Not an easy task for an old guy with many miles and cars under his butt.  My first car was really a little Honda 50 motorcycle but that doesn't count.

So here goes.

1.  1957 Chevy Bel Aire 2 door hard top.  God I loved that car but with gas an amazing $.25 I couldn't afford to  drive it it at 7mpg.

2.  1965 TR4A IRS.  BRG.  Nice car.

3.  1969 Alfa GTV.  BRG also with glove leather interior.  Went like heck.  Bought in Texas, stolen in Germany.

4.  1971 VW 411 Squareback.  UGH.

5.  1963 VW bug.  7 colors not counting the rust.

6.  1974 Fiat 128 (fun to drive0

7.  1976 Luv Stepside  pickup (Robins egg blue)

8.  1978 Rabbit. Baby diaper brown.

9.  1980 Rabbit.  Black/Black.  Gotti 4 spoke gold wheels.  Very low and fast.  Real head turner.

9 a.  1980 VW Rabbit pickup diesel.  Gutless.  40 hp and 40 mpg.  110M miles and still going.

10.  1987 Nissan Maxima sport.  Nice.

11.  1994 Dodge Caravan ES.

12.  1999 Suzuki Sidekick.

13.  1999 Chrysler Town and Country Limited  AWD van.  It was a van but a really great road trip car.  No doubt saved my daughters life by giving it up when t-boned by a metro bus.

14.  2003 Saturn Vue AWD

15.  And the love of my live, my lovely Alice Cooper, 2003 MCS.

Rob, Vickie and Alice

The question is, "When you turn on your car does it return the favor?"

I have not had a chance to own many cars yet. My first car was a Chevy Nova that I bought at 186,000 miles and put on 115,000 miles. I borrowed a Chevy S-10 for 6 months before buying my Ford Ranger which now has over 100,000 miles and counting. I put many miles on several of my parents cars which included Ford LTD ex-police car, Hyundai Daihatsu, and Chevy Suburban. I have driven many of my friend's cars including the big Ford Excursion. I still prefer the Mini any day.

24.  1994 Dodge Dakota pick up

25.  1996 Honda Accord

26.  1996 Toyota Tacoma pick up

27.  1958 BMW Isetta 300

28.  2001 Honda Accord

29.  2003 Toyota Tundra

30.  2004 BMW Mini Cooper

31.  1973 Austin Mini Cooper

Wonder if I should have had a dealer's license?  Anyway, we still own the last 3 vehicles.  The Tundra is the most comfortable to drive on long trips, the BINI is the most fun to drive on short trips, but my Classic Mini is the most fun to drive any time!

PM me, I am looking for a truck! I didn't want a crew cab, but we put the car seat in the back row of an extended cab and there is no way it be comfortable for my baby or wife. Gotta love the MINI, for such a small car there is so much room.

Driving in Europe is more fun!

Lets just say that I was in school for most of my driving life and didn't have the funds to spend on cool cars.  Who would want a neat car when you can buy books!

Ok, for $400 in 1996, I bought my first piece of crap: 1981 Toyota Tercel.  After the muffler fell off in a parking lot it sounded pretty beefy (at least until you saw me).

Then I upgraded to the 1993 Ford Escort.  Lets just say its a Ford, so we all know how much I spent replacing parts.  By the time it got rear-ended and totaled (damage was $2500...more than the value of my car..lol!) almost all the parts were brand new.

Still in college at this time I had to replace one pile with another one.  You thought the others were lame, but now I was driving in my sexy 1998 Ford Taurus!  Yeah, its a pretty hot car.  No...litterally!  I think I overheated it twice and learned to drive around with two antifreeze bottles of water in my trunk.  Every 40 miles or so I would have to fill it up again.  Oh yeah, then the transmission went out, the blower motor stopped working for about 2 years (I had mechanically challenged friends until a year ago), and the heater core was replaced.  All before 140,000 miles.

Gee, why did I buy a brand new car with a warrenty that ISN'T a Ford?  Now maybe you understand why I get so excited over everything MINI and speed.  I've never been proud of a car before or been able to accellerate uphill!

1. 1992 Mitsubishi Mirage, had this car for about 5 years and drove the hell out of it. Had to give it away cause it was worthless. I was trying to find a reason to get another car. After i gave it away it still ran for another year! the tranny gave way.

2. 1968 Morris Mini . still have this, and its absolutely hands down the most thrilling car to drive. 180's are fun :) its my baby

3. 1998 BMW 323is coupe , loved this car so much, and sadly sold it. But made a bit of cash after selling it. So it wasn't to big of a deal. This was my daily driver for about a year and never had any problems except insurance and gas prices were higher then needed (about 17mpg average) the way i drive.

4. 1992 ford escort. lol, all this talk about fords makes me laugh. "found on road dead" "F#%ked over rebuilt dodge" "Fix or repair daily" I hate the car, but it drives.  And only has 83k miles on it. So for 800 bucks its not a bad car. Gives me enough time to save up some cash for a hefty downpayment on an MCS. :)  I'd like to park the MCS with my mini.

I guess I've had my share of cars... mostly VWs.

From my first to the last:

1977 Mustang II.  That was my first car... my disco-sled.  It was gold with cream colored vinyl inside.  Actually a very clean, reliable car.

1969 Datsun pickup truck.  A death trap.  Had a leaky hydraulic clutch and the points would foul constantly.  Drove it for a few months and sold it.

1979 Opel Ascona.  My car when I was in the military in Germany.  It was painted "inert blue".  Any ex ammo troops will know exactly what color that is.

1974 VW Bug.  My first.  It was a low rider when I bought it while stationed in San Antonio.  Air shocks, slotted mags, a 1776 cc engine with a high lift cam and dual webers.  It was also a nightmare to keep in tune! Still, British Racing Green, deep tint on the windows and a stinger exhaust made it a pretty cool ride for a young, single airman.

1986 Honda CRX.  When I sold the bug due to a daily commute from Bellevue to B'ham, I sold the Bug and bought a more reliable, more comfortable car.

1967 Bug. Bought as a daily driver.  Loved that car.

1970 VW Bug

1973 VW Super Bug:  These were project cars, to goof around on.  I bought both in junky condition, cleaned them up, got them running and sold them for a very modest profit.  It was fun, but I realized that I'm really NOT a mechanic at heart.  It gets cold on the ground, adjusting valves and changing oil every 3000 miles...  sometimes it takes a while to learn these things about ourselves.

1974 VW Karmann Ghia.  Sold all the VWs to buy the Karmann.  Bought it in 1998 from original owner with 85k miles on it.  It was pristine.  This is the only car I miss and actually regret selling.  Original everything, and absolutely everything worked.  Even the defrosters!  For anyone who knows aircooled vws, you'll know how rare that is.

Sold it shortly after I bought the MINI.  I just couldn't have a car collection...  no room, and we needed the dough.
