Cry

Oh my god! I cannot believe this!
My little Udo started making a terrible scream when I'd put in the clutch over the weekend.

My fear is probably the throw out bearing or disc and sure enough, they think it is but don't know.

Price quoted to me today:

6 hours of labour to take apart Udo
$460 new clutch kit
6 MORE hours to put Udo back together

$1750.00!!!!

This doesn't include our mini discount, but my god!

Anybody else have their clutch go out SO SOON??!!!!

I don't ROD ON MY CAR! well, a little. but not enough to warrant a #$@#@ new clutch this soon?! HELP!

Also, 6 hours to get to the clutch seem a lot?
I was thinking 4 or 5...
This is being done at NW Mini in Fife, btw.

Thanks guys. Any information, ideas, tissues would greatly be appreciated!

If they have not started yet give Zahntech a call.

I spotted your car there today and wondered what was up. First advice is to tell NW MINI to STOP working on your car. Zahntech will do this for a lot less than the $110/hour labor at NW MINI, plus a clutch kit should  be no more than $200, shipped! You should be looking at far less than half of what NW MINI wants for the job.

We can make this far less painful, even if some of us have to step forward and install the clutch for pizza and beer. Promise.

Shoot me a PM if you want.

Makes me wonder what my clutch looks like at 72K+, with a couple of track and auto-x days.

the clutch on my 02 Cooper lasted about 80k  but anyone that knows my autox schedule knows i am a little hard on the car.   That also includes a bunch of drag race starts, one of the autox type events we do is ProSolo.  two cars line up at drag strip style start lights and launch.  after about 60 feet you turn out into a pair of mirror image autox courses...    Lots of fun.

the clutch install took me about 14 hours, but I'm not a pro mechanic.

went to Zahntech's website...is this the one in Redmond?

The site says $92 an hour, it's $20 less, but $20 x 12 is a lot!

CHEAPEST Clutch Kit I found was $271.80 at Auburn Foreign!

SO NW MINI wanted 460.00
Zahntech quoted me 370.00
and Auburn Foreign was the winner at 271.00

However, NW Mini are getting really bitchy about me bringing my own kit and that they are "well into the tear down,  car can be done tomorrow"
I said well atleast let me save a few hundred by bringing my own clutch kit in
!!!

Shucks...  so sorry to hear about your dilemma after the fact.  I wish we all would've seen this earlier so we could've helped saved you some money.  One positive note...  at least the job was done right at the dealer.  I've heard Zahntech does great work, but I don't know about Auburn Foreign.  Again... really sorry to hear about your misfortune.

If I recall, you are at least the second owner, right? I am on my car, too, and I also fear this. An inspection can reveal a lot of things, but not always clutch abuse. Why would somebody trade in such a wonderful, pretty little car? Is it because somebody learned to drive standard on it and they wanted to get rid of it before it had problems? Other things do keep me up at night, but I do think of this. Chalk it up to the previous owner and the perils of buying a used car.

Hi All,

I realize this thread is old but instead of posting a new one on the same topic I thought I'd add. I'm in a similar position. I've got an 06 Cooper with just over 37k (first owner after MINI San Antonio had it as a loaner for 900 miles) that apparently needs a new clutch (and possibly flywheel which they won't know about UNTIL they replace the clutch, or take it out I guess). Seems ridiculous that this happened JUST out of warranty but I guess it's showing up more and more. I attempted to get a quote from my normal shop but they refused stating they didn't want to compete with Seattle Mini next door (which was slightly odd I felt).
Anyway, long story long, has anyone had a clutch replaced more recently and/or does anyone have any recommendations other than Zahntech (I've emailed them for a quote already). Like I said, I'd love to simply have it done at my normal shop but they, at this time, aren't willing to do so (just had my brakes down by them and have always loved their work).

Thanks all in advance!

James Boyer just had one done. (Hot Shot).
He had it done at a shop about halfway between Snohomish and Woodinville.

You could try PM'ing him if he doesn't find this thread.

Zahntech is the place to go, if you can.

I found a good shop in Woodinville that has experience working on MINIs. (Woodinville Sports Cars) - you might check if they could do it for you.

I felt my clutch slip today when I was driving spiritedly. Hope it's just because I put the gas on too early...

Might want to check out Broadstroke Associates as well...good labor rates and factory trained BMW mechanics (specialize in BMW/MINI) in snohomish county.

Thanks Brenda for forwarding me this thread.
I echo Wildfamily's comments. I just had mine replaced a week ago tomorrow. I paid roughly what you were quoted (about $50-100 more) but have an aftermarket kit including flywheel. I can give you almost an exact quote of what Parker quoted me for an OEM replacement. About $1350 including parts and labor.

Parker knows his stuff. He's a certified Master tech for BMW and knows MINI's just as well. Give them a call and tell them James (and the others here) recommended them. Amy is his admin assistant.

12 hours of labor is what I was told by every place I called. Seems to be the standard.

Hi Kevin,
I just realized that we were responding to you, and not the OP LOL. Definitely give Amy and Parker a call at Broad Stroke. Just for reference, their shop labor rates are $85/hour.

12 hours of labor is what I was told by every place I called. Seems to be the standard.

Judging from the way the car is put together, 12 hours is not surprising. The entire bottom of the car needs to come out (and all the bits in between).

When my clutch goes i _might_ do it myself but would only attempt if I have a Bentley manual... I've done clutches before but never on a car with so little space under the bonnet.

Oh - while you have the thing apart, you should consider replacing the rear crankshaft seal. It's a known source of oil leakage.

My clutch gave up at 11,000 miles.  Hard to believe I've been driving a manual shift for 50 years and never had a clutch go out.  Warranty took care of the cost, but very disappointed in a clutch shot at this low mileage.
