On the last PSMini outing I attended (NW Harvest Run), several of you
were using GMRS/FRS radios for between car communication. I
brought along a commercial (business) radio that I had programmed with
the GMRS/FRS frequencies but I wasn't able to get it to communicate
with the other radios. I could hear it all just fine but I
couldn't be heard when I would transmit. I assume you were using
Privacy Tones (could also be called CTCSS, Subaudible Tones or possibly
something else). Do any of you happen to know which of the tones
or tone numbers (1 of 38) you are using? I need to program that
in too.
Thanks, Ken |

Just about anywhere. Watch the Sunday paper for sale ads. I got mine at WalMart. Costco has them too. |

I believe the pair of Motorola FRS/GMRS radios I got for my birthday
came from Target. Best Buy also has a selection of these radios,
too.

Watch out when buying the Best Buy ones. There are two versions of roughly the same radio. I didn't realize until after I had purchased mine and sent in the rebate, but the ones with 6500 in their model number are actually a Chinese brand that is paying to use the Motorola name on their radio. It is mostly a Motorola, but a cheaper knock-off. Cons include not being nearly as good with the range as the real ones, and the sending and receiving isn't nearly as clear as the real Motorolas. I'm a bit annoyed, especially since they weren't as useful as expected this last time at Whistler.

Really? I'm pretty certain that teh 6500 series I have has a 10
mile range when talking to other Motorola radios, because of their
proprietary communication method and whatnot. How do you tell if
the radio is one of the Chinese ones?

It's a specific model. When I get home and I can dig out the radios, I'll post it.
Also, I think the Chinese ones were had a grey front instead of the bright yellow. There were times on Blackcomb where I was out in the open and apparently my friends could not reach me. |

Ah, I found the link where someone did some research. I find that the performance comments are apt, and I am rather frustrated with this pair of radios. http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0001YFW94/103-6158564-7819 829?v=glance&n=172282 It's the "Motorola" T6500. |

That is the model that I have. I haven't had any problems with
them other than the batteries take way too long to charge...

I have a set of Conair FRS 14 channel radios. FCC ID LBBFRS200. Are these compatible with the frequencies used by PSMINI? We have used these while taveleing with another couple in our motorhomes and the work very well, but if not compatible with PSMINI will buy ones that are. Got to be ready for some serious driving. Thanks, Milo

Wow. I also have the 6500 set, and got that same set for a
friend. Very surprising. I'll have to look into that some
more.

I'll have to look at mine, too. We bought them as a set but even set to 7/21, we can only "send" with one of them ... maybe this explains it. I've been tempted to throw the bad one out the window in frustration ... maybe I should.

I've been thinking that if Motorola is going to put their name on the
product, they should also support that product with the backing that
their name carries as well. I looked at Motorola over other
brands because of that name, in part. If I had known that the
Motorola was not really a Motorola, and is only identified as such on
the packaging and not the actual product anywhere that I can find, I
would not have considered this pair, and would think twice about other
Motorola FRS radios, in case this practice is common.

A friend of mine picked up the Motorola set at Costco. Those are pretty
good, and I had no problems listening to them chat over the radio up at
Whistler. I'd go with the reviewers and look at the 5950, but do a lot
of research beforehand.
