John, that is correct. Rubber valve stems don't have the TPMS sensors. My eyes must be going bad because I can't tell by looking at that picture!

Couple things Tina,
First, It looks like those rims have rubber valve stems which means that I believe you don't have to worry about TPMS, is that right Greg and Larry? Second, my guess is when you tried to up upload your pictures your pictures the files were to big. I had to redo the resolution of your picture to get it to load. Picture files can only be 300kb or they won't load ![]() |

Tina, your wheels are really good wheels and from the pictures look like they are in pretty good condition. Can't really see the tread wear or amount of tread you have left.
My advice at this point is keep the wheels if you like the style and just find tires (run flats I think would be best for you).
Do you have a person that you could ask to look at your tires? If they are just at the wear marks, you have pleanty of tire left and you can take your time with finding new tires. You need someone local, close to you, that knows something about tires to look at them. Or just ask a "reputable" tire store to look and tell you how many miles they think the tires are good for.
Maybe one of your co-workers who knows something about tires can help you.
Stay positive! Everything will work out!
Cheers!

Good morning all,
I tried to upload pictures direct with this post, but it doesn't work, or I don't know how. Therefore, I try to post them in photobucket as the link below. I hope the link will work.
Could you please go to that link and take a look of the pictures of the wheels and the tires? Most of them are the front right tire, can you see them very clear? I try to a closer picture, so you can see how bad the front tires are (worn out).
Please share your thoughts with me about these wheels what I should do if you were me (not a car racing person, don't know much about car, and limited budget).
Thanks,

Tina, there is a small get together at a donut shop in Mill Creek on Sat, tomorrow at 11:00 AM: here the link
There will be several PS Mini people there and you can meet some people and we can all see your wheels and tires. I'm sure there will be no shortage of advice!
See if you can make it!
Cheers!

Good evening all,
Thank you for all the suggestions and comments. I just picked up the car from Mini Service. As I understand, this car has been sitting in the garage for at least 6 months; I wished Northwest Mini changed the oil for the car, but they didn't. I think it's about the timing. I want to take pictures of the wheels so bad, but I don't have my camera, and it's too dark outside. I will try to do that tomorrow, so everyone can see the wheels. Then...you can suggest if you were me, what I should do such as: keep the wheels, buy 17" or 16" wheels. I had a Dodge Neon before this. So you can tell that I have no experience about car. For example, when I drove the Mini home Tues for about 15-20 miles, I didn't even know the strange feeling come from the tires. I thought "hm...maybe that's how I suppose to feel on the run flat" (I am so so...bad). And the next morning, when I drove to work, when the driver wheel (or however it's called) started to shak real bad, I started to feel nervous. I was like "Oh, please, please make it to my work" b/c I couldn't control the car at all. That's when I know something was abnormal, it's not the "cool" feeling from the run flat anymore. :) I am being too detail because I would like you to know that I am a type of person who just sit in the car and drive. I don't know if something goes wrong unless the car has big problem or the engine is died, then I would know. I hope this might be helpful for you to suggest what types of wheels and tires that I should purchase for all year around. I don't have anyone helping switching or rotate tires, everything that I want to do, it will need to be done at the shop. So buying summer and winter tires are not a very good idea with my circumstances. Anyhow, I have read everyone's suggestion, I was about to write some notes . I will do the homework, and keep you posted. I am very glad and very appreciated that everyone is helping me a lot.Thank you all, I will try not to think about this too much now. I will leave issue there tonight, and I am going to learn how to play table tennis now, and I will try to have a nice night. Then, I take care of my "homework" tomorrow or this weekend. How does that sound? ![]() Again, thank you very much, and good night all. Thanks, Tina Edited by Tina2009 - March/11/10 at 6:20pm |

Larry, you're the MAN! $127.00 for run flat 18" in the correct size is a great dea and great findl!!!!!!!
Tire Rack has "approved" or what ever shops that will receive the tires and will mount & balance at a competitive price.
Tina, call Tire Rack and talk to them about similar run flat tires that are "all season". Of course, these are good tires and if you don't think you'll be going over the passes in the winter may just be the tire for you new car.
Cheers!

Something that should have been talked about is run flat tire. Don't feel bad that you didn't know it was flat the tire is designed to hold the weight of the car and you won't see your rims sitting on the ground when there is no air in them.

Greg spot on, I didn't say anything about tires and price for the 18s because all tire rack and discount tire was showing in a 205/40/18 were summer tire it seemed that they did not have a all season. I am thinking if we can find some 17 rims it would better choice of tires since she has already got a line on tire. I think she would like the ride better on 16s like Brenda mentioned. Tina might even be able to get into a set of 16 rims and tires for less then the cost of 4 18 tires. I like your idea of calling because alot of times they have deals that are hard to find on their site.
No worries we will help as best as we can. John |

The Yokohama S-drive I suggested above is more of a summer tire which won't be good for snow. So an all-season tire would probably be a better option for you.

Thanks Greg for verifying the TPMS. With regard to the size of the wheel bolts for OEM wheels, that is not an issue. All MINI OEM wheels will fit either size wheel bolt. It's certain aftermarket wheels that you need to be concerned about. http://www.mini2.com/forum/faq.php?faq=faq_wheels_tyres#faq_wheel_fitments Greg brings up a good point about keeping your wheels and getting new tires as the most hassle-free solution. Tire Rack has Yokohama S-Drive runflats for $127 each. http://www.tirerack.com/tires/tires.jsp?tireMake=Yokohama&tireModel=S.drive&partnum=04YR8SXL You can call Discount Tire to see if they can match or get close to that price. I know they carry the Yokohama brand. Another option is to have Tire Rack ship the tires to a local installer direct and have it mounted there. By going that route, you're looking in the $700 range after shipping and installation. Much cheaper than the dealer.

Tina, just start looking at the Tire Rack web site or better yet just call them. Ask them to explain the differences in the various tires and talk to them about run flats. Run flats are very good tires for everyday use if you don't mind a little harsher ride. They are more expensive, but don't worry you don't have to spend $2K.
You can buy non run flat tires for less money. However, if you get a bad flat you will not be able to drive on them very far or long. Of course, run flats tires, depending on where the flat is or how bad, may have to be replaced. The Tire Rack people are very helpful. Explain you don't need a performance tire and you think you would prefer "run flats" and ask about a flat fix for "non run flats".
You can get a "good" set of all season non run flat tires for about $100 or $125 a tire. Mount and balance will be another $125.00 or so. Run flat will be closer to $200.00 or more. If you have a Discount Tire store nearby, go in and just ask for help. You don't have to buy right then. They may even agree to rotate your tires for free, even though you didn't buy them there. Also talk to Les Schwab. I think their pricing is more expensive than Discount, in my experience.
After you talk to people you might think you can deal with non run flat tires with a good tire repair kit in the car. It really depends on how comfortable you are with using the tire fixes they have.
Hope this helps and when you get down to a couple of tires you think might work for you, post a question about them and people here will share their experience with knowledge about the tires.
Cheers!

[QUOTE=Boomer]Tina, Searocko is correct. Don't know the cut off date for the switch but it's easy to tell from looking at the valve stem on the tire. If it's a metal stem, it's the newer version (unless they put aftermarket stems on). Brenda maybe you can take a look or NW Mini can tell her.
Tina, you should not have any trouble selling those wheels. They are pretty pricey new, so you should get a decent price for them if you decide to sell. You might want to look on NAM and even put them for sale there and on craigslist.
Look at Tire Rack for tires. They have really good prices and I'd recommend you stay with the run flats since the car does not have a spare and it will be piece of mind for you just in case you do encounter a problem. You might also talk to Discount Tire once you price out tires at Tire Rack since my local Discount Tire will match Tire Rack's price or even beat it.
Also talk to Zephrgtsw about his tires. You should also be able to find stock wheels for your car at a really good price since many owners upgrade or change wheels quite often but remember they have to be from a 07 or later model due to the lug nuts.
The least expensive and less complicated way to do this may be to keep the wheels you have, if they are in good shape, and just get new tires. If you like the ride (with properly inflated tires) then just get the tires. You might be able to find barely used 18' run flats that someone wants to get rid of because they want a performance tire.
If you get the tires rotated as Brenda suggested, sounds like you have some time to shop around and see what is the least expensive thing to do. Run the numbers and then decide.
There are plenty of people that live around where you are and I'm sure they will help. It can appear complicated, but just stay calm. Investigate all your options and go with what fits your budget and needs.
Congratulations on your new car. I have a 07 MCS and love it. Once all these things are resolved you'll be lovin your new baby.
Cheers!
Hello Boomer,
Thank you for the detail message and calm me down as well.
When I read your message, I thought you were speaking for me because you mentioned all the concerns that I have.
I thought about just keeping the wheels that I have, and I will buy tires. However, it costs close to $2k for brand new tires (Northwest Mine quoted it for me). At this point, I can't afford that much for the tires, and I am not an aggressive driver either. On the other hand, I drive like an "old woman".
One member in here, Crikket, would like to sell 4 18" inches wheels and tires. Then I will sell the wheels that I have. Brenda is very nice that it seems like she offers me all the help that she can. However, I think it's too much if I take all her offer.
Zephrgtsw has a very good prices for the 17" tires (4 of them), and they will come without the wheels. I will need to look for wheels.
Hm...everything is not in one piece. But, Boomer, you are right, Brenda mentioned I can rotate the tires for now. I will try to enjoy driving my Mini around town for a short period of time, then ...what comes will come (I guess).
Thank you all!
Tina

Hello all,
I am so confused about the tires. When I bought this car, I just like the color and its interior. I didn't paid attention to the tires (so so flat), nor other stuffs on it.
I just thought I take to the Mini Service, then I can drive on the road. Now, the issue is the tires. Brenda have seen the wheels, and I have been too. But I don't know how to describe them. Therefore, I will take pictures, and post them here. Then everyone can take a look and share with me your thoughts. That would be a lot of help.
Greg, I already sent the message back to you. Thanks!

Depending on her build date, the early 2007 cars did not have the TPMS sensor inside the wheel. Greg (Boomer) has the older style ABS-related tire monitoring system on his '07. I think there is a way to tell by looking at the valve stem. Edited by searocko - March/11/10 at 2:53pm |

I'm looking to swap out my 17" run-flat tires. They are essentially brand-new (800mi). I just got the car; but want to go to Yokahama's; and don't want to keep my run-flats. I would be happy to sell them at a very reasonable price. But then Tina would need to find wheels separately (I defintely want to keep mine :)
Tina - if you are interested - send me a 'private message'. Actually - I'll send you one - and you can reply if you like

Yay!!! Somehow, I get a wireless connection (not sure from where). Thank you again Brenda for your help. You are very nice. After I take my car to the service tomorrow, I will take some pictures of the wheel, and hopefully I know how to post them here, or in the market place area, so you can take a look of the wheels.
Thank you very much everyone. |

Tina told me that she doesn't have internet at home, so she most likely won't be able to reply until tomorrow morning.
I think the best bet for her would be to find some smaller wheels with tires to replace what she has. Although, maybe she should just replace the tires with the same size she has on there now?
John - I did notice that her car doesn't have the upgraded JCW brakes. It's just the JCW wheels that look like this:

Good point on the lug bolt and wheel hole size John. I forgot about that. I had the same issues when changing to the replacement locking lug bolts. The MINI dealer sent me the wrong size twice. Which reminds me.... I still have that locking lug bolt set that won't fit. The first initial replacement aftermarket wheels were also the wrong size hole diameter (too big). |

Cogrates Brenda, need to give you a Mini First Responder Badge.
Good to see your getting things worked out Tina. Just a couple of things I believe you car has 14mm bolt holes not 12mm like the gen1 cars do so that is some thing to find out if you come accross used rims. Second you my ask NW Mini what is the smallest rim you can go to so that they will still clear the brakes. John |

Tina, If you can get a photo of the 18" wheels, you might have luck selling them on this site under the Marketplace area of the forums. Those JCW wheels are pretty awesome....

Hi Brenda and everyon,
Thank you very much for all the helps and supports again. As Brenda mentioned, all the troubles that the car has, Northwest will do it for me under warranty. Now, the next step to worry is to get new tires or get new wheels and new tires, if someone is interested to get these 18" wheels from me. Please let me know if you have any suggestions.
Thanks!
Tina

Way to go Brenda - I knew you would be right on top of things. I can possibly come up with some tires by switching over to my summer tires a little early - they would be 17" runflats on S-lite wheelswith lots of miles left. She should really go to 16" or 17" wheels and tires and sell the 18" wheels. |

John - She has a manual. The wheels are locked too. Thank goodness there's the wheel lock key (in the boot). I suggested she rotate the worse tires to the back just to be safe. I think they'll be okay for a while. I offered to do it, but we live a bit too south for her to drive. Anyone nearby to Tacoma who could give her a hand rotating them? I'd hate for her to make a haste decision in picking out tires (and/or wheels). She got a very good deal on it and I think the tires are a minimal investment. It's a big plus that all repairs and maintenance is covered.

Tina, if your MINI didn't come with a manual make sure you get one, because it will explain all the different lights that can come on on the dash. If NW MINI doesn't have one, I'm sure you can get one on line.
Also, I work in downtown Tacoma and live in Gig Harbor, so if you need any help feel free to give me a call. I might be able to help with any legal questions if it comes to that.
