Hello guys!!

Sorry I haven't been around much lately but my work schedule is pretty insane.

I am trying to change ItalianJob's look and I would really like to do the Joey mod.
Has anyone done this "mod"?
Is anyone willing to help me out?
I just finish installing the aero kit grill and it was a PROJECT for me (took me 7hrs mostly because I don't have the right tools). I just don't wanna end up with a spare pair of head lights. Wink

Thanks as usual!

let me know

I have seen that mod on NAM, like the looks of it, but havent gotten the guts up to do it myself, I would be interested in hearing peoples experience with it as well

We have a few threads here about that, there are some good DIY's. There are about 3 people here that have done it but I believe they have left. Maybe you can talk Kurt into it.
If everything seems under control, you're just not going fast enough.

I am a little hesitant to do this without having successfully done it on my own car.

The threads that I have read have shown that there is risk to doing this in such as:

  • Difficulties in cracking open the lenses and re-gluing them without looking amateur;
  • Visibility of excess glue/sealant;
  • Water penetration, rust or discoloration due to insufficient application of glue/sealant.

I tried to joey mod my tail lights but gave up when the housing cracked when i tried to split it apart. There was no actual damage to the plastic parts, but there would have been an obvious and visible imperfection that would have driven me crazy.
I ended up putting external tint over the tail lights. (It does make the lights a little darker...I'm looking for brighter bulbs that won't melt the housings. Any suggestions from anyone?)

There was a guy on NAM recently who was selling his Joey modded headlights that were painted in dark silver, the body color of my MINI. I was tempted to buy them, but he would have wanted my headlights in return, and in the pictures, it looked like there was some haze on the inside of the headlights.
Plus, if they looked professional in appearance, I doubt he would be motivated to sell them... even if he was selling the car, it would have looked great and a potential buyer probably never would have noticed.

heat gun/ blow drier is your friend when it comes to getting the lens off of headlamp.  granted these are for facelift headlights (which look AWESOME when painted, its more or less the same for the 02-04's

I saw this comment in the above thread for pre-facelift Xenon headlights that give me pause:
"
Yep. I tried to joeymod my 04 headlights (pre-facelift)

the black plastic gets soft before the headlight glue.
"
I might be open to helping someone do this on a 05-06 but damage/breakage seems a high probability for 02-04 model years. Must be different type of glue.

If I have too much money at the end of the month (haha), I'm seriously considering just buying some 05-06 headlamps - the failure rate for the 02-04 is high, and the 05-06 would look so much nicer Joey-modded than the 02-04 anyway.

If I do that, I might have a spare set of 02-04 for sale if someone wants to try it out or do a Xenon conversion...

Couldn't wait - I just ordered a set of 05-06 post facelift Xenons. (DDM Motorworks has them on offer for $432 each, which is a lot cheaper than the dealer or Pelican Parts).
If all goes well, I will have my 02-04 set on sale in a few weeks.

I am thinking to paint in body color and use red for the ring around the projector!!

Nice. It looks a little louder than I was imagining, but probably will still do it this way.

Hey - this just got posted on NAM:
Pre-facelift xenons for sale, pair for $420.
Heck of a lot cheaper than the post-facelift headlamps and if you successfully mod your own headlamps, you can just turn around and sell them again.
