Well, isn't that swell!  I hope this happens (recall notice) before I wheels up on my trip to SoCal and and points north east!!

Could I assume that the notice will be emailed as well as mailed?  Also would any dealership, other than the dealership of record, fix it?  I would think it would be yes on both counts but I will check!!

I have never received a recall by email.  I believe there is a requirement that notification be in writing.  I have had recall work done at a dealer other than where I purchased the car - (Toyota Highlander)

Thanks Jack!  Come to think of it I have not received an email from a dealer about a recall either, and I have owned 2 cars that had recalls when I had email.

Maybe there is a way that they could do both?!?  If someone is on a trip far from home then getting to the mailbox is not happening, but an email is possible.  I will check with MINI.

More info on the recall can be found at motoring file including:

The recall applies to every turbocharged MINI from 2007 - 2011 model years.  2012 model years do not seem to be affected (Model year changeover occurred in October 2011)

It sounds like presold cars will be delivered without the fix and will then be part of the recall - Dealer owned inventory will be fixed before delivery.  <<<<  This is not perfectly clear - there may be further information available later.

PDF of the actual recall notice is available here: RCDNN-12V008-7102.pdf

Motoring File article is available here:

It seems that my MINI escaped the blaze!  It was built 11/10WooHoo  One less thing to worry about!  I saw that part of the recall notice recommending parking outside until it gets fixed; that sounds like a CYA thing from BMW/MINI Corporate so they are not responsible for structural loses.

I thought all Countryman's had the Refresh Engine but apparently some still had this problem??

My "S", built 11/10, just squeaked into the clear zone where the Countryman's built 11/10- 1/11 were still affected.  Was MINI still putting in those part into the Refresh engines???

Here's the AP article on it, cribbed from KING 5:

PORTLAND, Ore. - BMW of North America is voluntarily recalling nearly 89,000 Mini vehicles because of a water pump malfunction that could cause a fire.

The company says in a regulatory filing Monday that the water pump that cools the turbocharger in some of its cars has a circuit board that can malfunction and overheat. That could cause smoldering and potentially a fire.

No accidents or injuries have been reported. BMW will replace the pump at no cost to owners.

The recall applies to 2007-2011 models of the Mini Cooper S, 2008-2011 Cooper S Clubman, 2009-2011 Cooper S Convertible and 2011 Cooper S Countryman. It also includes the 2009-2011 models of the Mini JCW, JCW Clubman and JCW Convertible.

No accidents?  Tell that to FerRari- his wife's '09 MCS caught fire in October.  Pictures on this thread and also posted on NAM if I remember correctly.

My 2011 MCS, with a build date of 11/10, had to have the "Thermostat" replaced because of " a bad solder joint was causing it to throw codes".

I was having a hard time wrapping my head around a thermostat and bad solder joint in the same context.  If a solder joint is "Bad" it is probably loose or a total failure causing no connection.  If just loose then there is a high possibility for increased electrical current being drawn by that circuit and that generates more heat in the wiring and could cause a fire.

MINI replaced my "Thermostat" for that "defective electrical connection" but had to pull the water pump to do so and then bleed the radiator system.   It sounds as though the 2011 refresh engines could have the same problem and MINI is not willing to acknowledge it yet.

Bruce, was that FerRari's wifes car that made the news in Seattle, burning at the curbside?

Hmmm- that seems like a lot of extra work to fix the auxiliary water pump in the turbo.  Maybe they were covering all their bases somehow.

I don't remember seeing the story on FerRari's car on any of the TV news, but it could have been.  I first saw it on a thread on NAM.

NW MINI said that there were 3 months of production that produced those defective parts in "The thermostat".  Sounds fishy....

That does not make sense at all and I doubt they know what they are talking about. 2007 to 2011 cars. How can that only include 3 months.

NW MINI was addressing the particular symptom my MINI had.  I Posted it somewhere in this Forum under T-Stat.  http://www.psmini.org/forum/search_results_posts.asp?SearchID=20120117164252&KW=T-Stat

I was incorrect in my previous Post in this Thread, it was 4 months.

All pretty fishy and if that was the case why didn't they issue a recall for it?  Just waiting for we unsuspecting MINI owners to complain or inquire?

I stopped by Seattle MINI yesterday to pickup something, had a chance to ask the service desk about the recall.  As of yesterday, they said the recall only affected Canadian MINI's - King 5 did a thing about it in the morning but it did not call out US or Canada MINI's

Not sure if its a misunderstanding between MINI corporate and the dealer, either way I was told I'd be notified when Seattle MINI was notified.  Since Seattle MINI hasn't wronged me in the past and they have a lot of good will from me, I have to side with them and assume they are coming up with a game plan to address the influx of MINI's that will need to have the fix.

Till then I'll be driving around with a bag of marshmallow and having happy thoughts.

I posted a link to the official BMW Recall notice they sent to The United States National Highway Traffic Safety Administration in my earlier post:

PDF of the actual recall notice is available here: RCDNN-12V008-7102.pdf

I suggest everyone concerned read all four pages - it will clear up lots of misinformation being spread by different news and automotive sites.

It is possible that the 4 months of manufacturing that produced the faulty parts was the supplier who made the circut boards - MINI probably used those parts for a longer manufacturing periond in producing MINIs using those defective parts.

You are right Jack!  After all it is just a car and it is mass manufactured.  If it was built to NASA Spec then things would be different, but it is not.  What we apparently are talking about is a circuit that was probably tank dipped.  Darn near impossible to spot the problem with the naked eye or a quick field test.

I had a 1 week old Triumph TR4 fail because of a primary coil wire that was broken inside the insulation!  It let me down on the Oakland Bay Bridge in heavy traffic.  Those were very simple cars and nothing like a MINI, other than 4 wheels.  The more complexity the more possibilities for error; it is a simple equation.

I will take the MINI any time over the old cars, even if I have to pack a long stick for marshmallows or hotdogsThumbs Up

Already have that covered...  Because I'm cheap, I figured I could use the oil dip stick since it didn't break off - see thread in Performance Modifications.  Waste not want not...

AFAIK my wife's car never made it to the news. The fire actually coincided with the day various websites announced NHTSA opening the investigation which resulted in this recall.

Hi all-
Seattle Mini hasn't sent out the recall notices yet but they have the VIN list for the recall cars if anyone wants to get a jump on this. I scheduled my appt this morning and they said the work takes about an hour and they won't provide a loaner car since it doesn't take too long.  Has anyone here gotten theirs done yet?
