    Posted: June/07/11 at 4:07pm
I was talking with Beth over the weekend (escapepod) and she mentioned that some people were interested in a driver skills class, but thought they were too expensive.  So I'm here to organize a Driver Skills event for PSMINI and to let you know they're fun, affordable, and well worth every penny.

Here's the facts:

Classes are $65 for the day, $30 extra if you need to rent a helmet.  This includes: all driving instruction, lunch, trained instructors, and bottled water.    The classes are held in Bremerton at the Motorsports Parkway there (old airport).

PCA's Driver Skills days do a multitude of things to make you a better, safer driver; to get to know your car better, and most importantly, to have fun!

The days are typically split into 4 segments: skid pad, slalom, braking/accident avoidance, and auto cross.  Speeds typically don't exceed 40-50mph and you're always with a trained instructor.

So, I talked to my friend Robert in the PCA (Porsche Club of America) about a possible MINI day, and if we get enough people interested, he can group us so we can all do it together.  I've done the class twice, and I highly recommend it to anyone who wants to learn the limits of their MINI, improve their driving skills, learn how their car reacts under unplanned circumstances, etc.   This is not a high performance event, it's very relaxed, go as fast as you're comfortable, but be prepared to be asked to push the limits of yourself and your car, and most importantly, have fun doing it.

Here are some links for information:

**REGISTRATION LINK**

We're looking at October 15th as the date, and he'd prefer that we get a minimum of 10 people/cars who are interested in doing this.

If this sounds like something you'd want to do, please let me know so I can begin coordination with Robert, and work on getting this set up!

PSMINI'ers,
I'd highly recommend this for any driver. You become a safer driver by learning about the physics of the car dynamics and how to respond in an emergency situation - and have a lot of fun at the same time!

This kind of education is mandatory to get a driver license in many industrialized countries.
Don't let the helmets scare you away. It's a really safe event - they just need the helmets for their liability insurance! This is a fun and educational event, rain or shine.

At the end of the day there is a mini autocross style lapping event for those who want to do it. That's a lot of fun!

Jason, August would be difficult but I might be able to swing one of the October dates.

Well Done SuperCoop!
Forgive me for getting on a soap box, but this is the best thing you can do for yourself.
$65 bucks is cheap. What is that a week without gourmet coffee?
This could save your life!!!!
NO BS!!!!
Several years ago PS MINI organized a track day with Proformance Racing School and NW Mini. It was expensive but worth every penny. Half the day was a skills day and half was a track day!
This or autocrossing are the best activities if you want to go fast SAFELY, learn about yourself and learn your cars capabilites.
Autocross or Solo II is GREAT FUN and your learn more than you'll ever imagine but if your like me, it's just too long a day for TOO LITTLE TIME on the clock!!!!
This, however, is FANTASTIC!!!!!! NO PRESSURE! Just good old fashion fun while learning about your car and yourself. BMW also offers the same class but at Pac. Raceways & includes a parade lap on the race track. Stations are not as good (IMHO) and the cost is higher ($95.00).
Kurt is correct------------many countries require training like you'll get at this class before you can QUALIFY FOR A LICENSE!!!!
Spoil yourself, & JUST DO IT!!!! HAVE YOUR KIDS DO IT WITH YOU!!!!!
GREAT BONDING EXPERIENCE!!!!
Cheers!

Thanks Pat!!!! Yes, they'd have to have their license but they could share their Mini's. Wouldn't get as much seat time but would be great fun. I can still remember teaching my daughter to drive in a Fiat 124 Sport Spyder. She used to come with my bride & I to PCA Autocross events in Northern CA  but we couldn't get her to drive. Too embarassing, I guess.
The only reason she hung out was because one of her girlfriends parents, and our friends, did the same thing & I think both had crushes on some of the younger guys that actually drove. They'd only stay for part of the day & then take off.

Cheers!

I will second or third everything said above about the value of these classes.  It's not a 'racing thing'.  The skills you learn here are essential for everyday driving and understanding how your MINI will react in driving situations.  With the number of new MINI owners that we have, we should easily be able to put one of these together with a minimum of 10 people.  It's really fun to do it as a group of MINIs!  Let's do it!

This type of class is one of the most valuable 'Mods' you can make in getting the most out of your MINI.  We went through the one mentioned by Boomer above with NW MINI and it was worth every penny, but WAY more expensive!

We could make one of the October dates, but won't be back from MITM in time to do the August date.  Thanks for setting this up, Jason, and count one of our cars in as I'd like to do a refresher if the schedule works!

So then lets focus on the October dates.  We need at LEAST 10 committed vehicles.

Please seriously consider this, this truly is one of the best things you can do for yourself and your car.

Jason, this is a great idea.  I did the ProFormance school several years ago and I learned so much about what my car can actually do.  I'm in for the October dates - can't do August.

By the way, I assume Cabrios are able to take part.  I think some car club events won't allow them.

I'm going to vote that we do the 15th of October, that is a Saturday as opposed to the 30th being a Sunday, and trust me, you'll want the day after to recuperate and re-energize, it'll take a lot out of you.

So, October 15th is the date, I'll start a running tally of people interested at the top.  Once registration opens, I'll post that information as well.

And yes, you can take convertibles.

Excellent!!   We're up to 7 people now, would love to see at least 3 or more join!  If you know someone in the club that would want to do this but they don't browse the site very often, mention it to them!  The more we have the merrier!

Sweet!!!   Sorry if I didn't add you yet, the forms don't always notify me of new messages coming in for some reason.

Ok, so I've fully updated the list, if you see ?? by your name it means I wasn't sure by your post if you were confirmed or not, please let me know either by posting here or sending me a PM.

I should hopefully have the registration/payment link soon, it's not published for our date yet.

I recently bought a Mini (2011 Cooper S), and I was at Bremerton with PCA yesterday.  Mini is a perfect car for this sort of exercise.  I highly recommend this to all of you.  I have attended these classes twice with PCA, and have been volunteering since last year.

Mini is my first FWD car, so I wanted to see what this car can do.  Skills day is perfect for this!  And my God Mini is awesome!  Superb handling, so agile...

I will be there as a volunteer for sure, but I might also attend to the class.

Hi Erhan - nice to see you on the PSMINI Forum! Will we see you and your MINI at one of the remaining track days this year?

James - the skills day is a full day event. To participate, you would need to be there from before 9am until about 4pm. The free driving after 4pm is optional.  But no one would complain if you cut out early...

Kurt, thanks for the welcome!

I will bring the 350Z to this Friday's BMWCCA HPDS.  After this one, September 3rd, September 9th, and September 29th are left.  I will attend all these and I am pretty sure I will bring the Mini to at least one of them.

Hot Shot, sorry you have to drop out, I'll try and organize another one soon.

I think we have at least 10, if not more, to do the event.   I think registration should be open, if not very soon as well, so I'll check on that and post here to update.

Thanks!
