(Son Of) HAULIN ASH WINE TOUR UPDATE

We just finished the second dry run and we think this has all come together nicely.

On Saturday we will be going to the following wineries (more info below):

Naches Heights (lunch)

Thurston Wolfe/Winemakers Loft and surrounding wineries

Kestrel

TIMETABLE

Depart North Bend (Los Cabos parking lot) at 8:00 (driver’s meeting at 7:45).

(Directions to Los Cabos.  I 90 to Exit 31 (WA 202 W) towards North Bend.  Enter roundabout, take 3rd exit onto Bendigo Blvd S.  Right onto Mount Si Blvd.  Arrive at 580 SW Mount Si Blvd, Issaquah.)

Arrive at Indian John Rest area 9:00.

Depart Indian John at 9:20; arrive at Yakima Canyon entrance 10:20.

Arrive Naches Heights 11:30 for tasting and lunch.

Depart Naches Heights at 12:45; arrive at Thurston Wolfe/Winemakers Loft and surrounding wineries (Prosser) at 1:45.

Depart Thurston Wolfe/Winemakers Loft at 2:45; arrive at Kestrel Winery at 2:55.

Depart Kestrel between 4:30 – 5:00.  Canyon run and arrive at hotel at 5:30 – 6:00.

No-host Bar at 7:00, dinner at 7:30.

WINERIES

Naches Heights Vineyard

This is a relatively new tasting room (opened in April, 2012) in an absolutely gorgeous setting.  There is a waterfall and a nice view of the surrounding vineyards.  There are tables on the patio and also scattered about the grounds which we can use for a picnic.  They also sell some selected meat and cheese platters and Panini sandwiches for around $12.00. Their wines are moderately priced ($13.00 to $24.00).  Wine tasting fee is $5.00, but if enough people come (about 30 minimum) they will waive the fee.  They also brew and serve their own beer.

Thurston Wolfe/Winemakers Loft (and multiple tasting rooms within 1 1/2 block radius)

Thurston Wolfe was named winery of the year for 2012.  They sell primarily red wines ($16.00 - $50.00).  They have asked that no more than 12 of our group be in the tasting room at one time because they can’t close off a section for us. We will devise a system so everyone who wants to taste there is accommodated.  There is a $5.00 tasting fee, refundable with a two bottle purchase.

Right across the street is the Winemaker’s Loft.  It houses 3 small (10 -15 people) tasting rooms (Martinez & Martinez, Maison Bleue, and Coyote Canyon) which have very little retail circulation, and one large tasting room (Apex Cellars) which can hold 15 -25 of us.  Apex has a tasting fee of $3.00, and will allow tasting of multiple wines.  The owners of Apex also bottle under the names of Bridgman, Washington Hills, and Chocolate Shop.

Approximately 1 ½ blocks away are the following tasting rooms:  Gamache ($5.00 tasting fee refundable with purchase), Wine O’Clock (featuring wines from Bunnell Family Cellars, RiverAerie, and Newhouse Family Vineyards), and Millbrandt Vineyards

Kestrel Vintners

At Kestrel we will have a full private tour, approximately 1 ½ hours long, led by the assistant winemaker.  They will take us through the process of growing the grapes, the Crush, production and aging, and final product.  All of this will be accompanied by wine tasting paired with domestic and foreign cheeses.  The tasting includes 2 Falcon Series, 2 Reserve wines, and 2 barrel samples (a special treat). The cost will be $15.00 per person, and will not be applied to the purchase of wine.

After leaving Kestrel we are planning on a drive through a twisty canyon on the way to the hotel.

HOTEL

We are staying at the Clover Island Inn in Kennewick.  The cost is $74.00 per night for a single queen bed and $82.00 for two queen beds.  They are holding 30 riverside rooms for our group, but reservations must be made by September 1st.  After that, the hotel will still honor the rate, but will do so only on a room availability basis, and not necessarily on the river.

We have planned a dinner at the hotel. We have a private dining area for our group (same area as last time) with a private no-host bar.   There will be four entrees available: Grilled Salmon, Prime Rib, Pasta Primavera (all $17.00), and Chicken Cordon Bleu ($18.00).  There are also two restaurants within two blocks.  The Ice Harbor Brewing Company serves pub fare, and the Cedars Restaurant is a steak/seafood restaurant with a higher priced menu.  We will need to know if you wish to join us for dinner or will be having dinner on your own.

An expanded continental breakfast at the hotel is included in the room price.

SUNDAY ACTIVITIES

We are still trying to coordinate a drive with the Mid-Columbia MINI club to the wind farm at Jump-off Joe, followed by a group photo at Columbia Park.  We expect most people will want to drive back home that day.  However, for those who are interested, we are leading another tasting tour to three wineries next door to each other (no need to drive between them).  These are J. Bookwalter, Barnard Griffin, and Tagaris wineries.  There is a $5.00 tasting fee at Barnard Griffin and a $7.00 tasting fee at Tagaris.  We are members of J. Bookwalter’s wine club and are trying to have them waive the fee for members of our group.  If not, the tasting fee there is $5.00.

Both J. Bookwalter and Tagaris have restaurants.  We plan to eat at Tagaris and have made reservations for twelve.  We have the option of indoor or outdoor seating depending on the weather.  If more people want to join us we will increase the number for our reservation.  If they are unable to accommodate all of us we will eat at Bookwalters.

After we finish this Sunday wine tour several of us are going to spend Sunday night at the Clover Island Inn.  The PS MINI room rate will still apply so join us if you can.  The more the merrier.

OH No! I'm missing one from the trio on Sunday. I will work on seeing if Tracey can shift her work schedule so she can drive as I am the designated wine taster. This looks like a good time.

This is going to be a great run - great roads, great company,  great wineries.  Even if, like me, you are not a wine imbiber, it will be a fun drive and great get-away.

Some background on the name:
Nobody has asked about the Haulin' Ash name for this event - but there is a story behind the name.
The first PSMINI Haulin' Ash Spring Wine Tour was held on May 17/18 2008 which happend to be anniversary of the date (May 18th 2008) that Mt. St Hellens errupted and dumped a few million tons of ash on Eastern Washington and places further east. Yakima had 5" of ash on the ground.
For those who missed the eruption or wold like a recap:

Weather is looking great for this run!  85 and sunny!  Tri-Cities group is going to lead us up to Jump Off Joe Wind Farm again (did you see their video?  Hairpin turn coming down done by Todd Hedeen)
Still hope more of you will join us, but if not, we'll have an intimate, but 'tasty' group!

We second what Linda said - this should be top-down weather!  Bring water too.

Remember, we are going to meet tomorrow at 7:30 - 7:45 so we can leave by 8:00. There is a Standard gas station across the street from Los Cabos, and a McDonalds next to it for breakfast.  We'll try to have extra radios if you don't have one or forget.

Working at getting it lineup with City of Kennewick to get gate open for photo-op at Columbia Park Sunday morning. Last time we lucked out with a park volunteer nearby with key to gate when we arrived.

Enjoy your drive over
