Hello folks!
My 2005 r53 with ~54k miles is making a sound that reminds me of the tensioner that went out in 2012 CORNERS from this group helped me out last time, but I'm not sure how to tackle it this time around. I live in Issaquah - does anyone recommend a shop or help on the Eastside? Thanks! Nik |

That's too bad. Are you suspecting the belt tensioner or timing chain tensioner? Can you record the sound (easiest way is to make a video and upload to YouTube)?
Bad belt tensioner sounds like a squeak or chatter. Bad chain tensioner sounds like 16 tiny elves inside your engine pounding on it with little hammers.

Hmmm...might be the latter! It doesn't sound good.

Definitely sounds like this one https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H_rVlF0494g
I think my battery died from the car sitting (tried jumping, no luck) so I'll need to get a new one. I couldn't find a video of the belt tensioner sound to compare to.

I've got a new Optima on the way, so I'll record a video as soon as I can.

First pass from SLE left them suspecting it is not the tensioner, but maybe a rail guide. They are going to take the valve cover off and let me know what they find.

Interesting. Did they remove the tensioner?
