If it is truly the pump then you are looking at some where around 600 to 800 just for the pump.

What is going on?

If the pump is out it would be very hard to turn?

If everything seems under control, you're just not going fast enough.

Yes, the power steering is out. So the wheel is incredibly hard to turn, yes.
I added power steering fluid, as it was low, it helped for a few days, but now it's back out.
I read 2005 and earlier had problems with the pumps :(

Not sure about that, I don't see any notices on that. I believe there was a issue with the wire connecting and no fan cover for the cooling fan. If it works when you add fluid it may still be ok and you just have a leak some where. You may want have a shop like Zahntech take a look at it.

I had to replace the Power Steering pump on my 02 MCS. (it had seized) It is a known problem for the 02-05 to fail and if not replaced can start a fire.

Ouch. That sucks. Again I'll put in a good word for Broad Stroke Associates in Woodinville/Snohomish. Give them a call and see what they can do for you?

If money is tight, you are not handy with tools, and can come to the Bothell area, I could put in a new PS pump for you for like $50 + the cost of the pump & power steering fluid.
It only takes about 2 hours to replace. I did mine a couple months ago and it wasn't hard.
They have them in stock at the dealer. With your MINI club discount, it's about $550 including pump, fluid and hose clamp, if I recall correctly.
