    Posted: July/16/10 at 7:25am
Our friends to the north would like to get together and meet up in Bellingham on Saturday, July 31st for a beautiful drive up to Mt. Baker. If you haven't been on this drive you won't want to miss out. We will travel through eastern Whatcom county on up the Mt. Baker Highway to Artist Point at the foot of Mt. Shuksan and Mt. Baker.

Meet up pont: Lowe's @ 1050 E Sunset Dr, Bellingham - take the Sunset Drive/Mt Baker Highway exit (east) - about 1.5hrs north of Seattle just off I-5. (There will also be a meet-up at the Smokey Point Rest Stop for those that want to caravan up to B'ham. Departure will be at 8:30)
When: 9:30 AM (depart at 10:00 AM)

Make sure and bring your camera and a picnic lunch to eat at the top! Also bring $5 to purchase a USFS Forest Pass for parking in the National Forest. Hope to see you there! This will be a great chance to meet some of our fellow Canadian friends as well as hook up with many of our club members from Skagit and Whatcom counties.

I think that day works for us. I'll be looking for the caravan heading north. Way overdue for a group drive.

Hope it is sunny this time.  I would like to see the view from up there.
Last time was a great drive just could not see anything once we got there.  Oh well the drive was worth it.
Hope we don't have to follow the miata's again.

WooHooMy hubby Steve said he'd join me on this drive together.  We've never been to Mt. Baker, so we're looking forward to it.

Any idea when we'll reach our final destination at Artist Point?  We may have to take off early for a party that starts later in the afternoon in the Auburn area (my Battalion Chief's 40th anniversary in the fire service) Star.

It's about 1 1/2 hrs from B'ham to Mt baker, depending on traffic. last year we stopped at the ranger station for about 1/2 hour to pay for parking permits. $5.00 per car, and I think that the ranger station has a credit / debit card vending machine.

So anyhow about 2 hours up unless we get stuck behind some Miatas. The way back holds some lunch possibilities including the Beer Shrine - Super duper great wood fire pizza and very good local micro brew, so hopefully the Cheif's party starts at 6:00. Smile

FYI It looks looks Artist's Point will not be open. They are working to clear the last few miles but they don't know when they will be finished. Heather Meadows is open so we will be able to get close.

That late start to summer didn't help I guess. Oh well....Heather Meadows is still right up there at the top and great shots of Mt Shuksan and relfections in the lake.

Well, son-of-a-gun!  We'll be up at Birch Bay so I think we'll just motor down the road and meet y'all at Lowes and go for a drive.  (BTW, Lowes is off of exit #255).

Traditional meet-up point for drives North is the Smokey Point Rest Stop.  Somebody can figure out what time we would have to leave from there to be at the Lowes parking lot by 9:30.  Allow about 1/2 hour stop at Smokey Point for people coming from the South.

Looking forward to having Ken and Janet on a drive - its been a while....   Last time I think they were at Mt. Baker it was about 30 degrees at Artist Point and we all watched in envy as Ken grilled hamburgers -

Is there anyone up north near Everett or Bellingham that wouldn't mind Steve and me camping out with them on Friday night?  We were thinking of hoteling it at first, but thought of pitching a tent as well.  Shoot me a PM if you know of any decent places to stay near Everett to Bellingham.  Big smile

You are welcome to stay at Chez Grouell, if you wish.  If you want to go further north (or prefer a facility with room service!), there are plenty of the chain hotels from here to Bellingham.

Oh wait, you wanted "a decent place".........Wink

It takes just under an hour to get up to B'ham from Smokey Point so if folks want to meet up at the Smokey Point reststop and  be ready to leave by 8:30 that should work. So let's say 8:30 departure from Smokey Point for those that want to caravan north to B'ham

On the return from B'bam in the afternoon I'll be glad to lead those who want to on a drive down Chuckanut Drive through Skagit Valley for those who are interested. My old neck of the woods and there are some nice driving roads to be had.

We will be coming from Yelm, can someone post how to get to Smokey Point from the yelm/olympia area?  Smokey Point is a rest area??  We would like to meet you all there and follow the group up to Bellingham.  Is there anyone from this area going?  We could caravan up to Smokey Point to meet the rest of the group :)

Glad to hear you are coming. The Smokey Point restsop is just north of exit 206 (Smokey Point Exit) just north of Marysville on I-5. Just take I-5 north from Seattle and it's the first reststop after you pass through Marysville. See you there!

Hi Georgia,

If we have to meet everyone at 8:30 AM at the Smokey Point, it takes about 1 & 1/2 or 2 hours from Tacoma to this Smokey Point.  Should I meet you at 6:30 AM in Tacoma then?  We can meet at the Shell gas station at exit 134.  If you're coming from South, please take exit 134, then make a right turn at the traffic light, as soon as you make a right turn, you will see the "Shell" gas station on your right side.  Please let me know if you think we should meet earlier.  Oh, here is the address that where we will meet.

Shell
2802 East Portland Avenue, Tacoma - (253) 627-6448

I will see you there.
