Return Again To This Is Stonehenge Again

Official announcement:

This is the official announcement for "Return Again To This Is Stonehenge Again", scheduled for Saturday, July 21st & Sunday, July 22nd.  The date this year has shifted a bit as we wanted to wait until school was out and until after the date of some national MINI events.  The route and schedule has changed a bit this year as well.  The weather in Goldendale will most probably be sunny and warm, but not unbearably hot.

Again this year- we are streamlining the payment process and having payments sent directly to PSMINI!  So please send your $15 per car to psmini@psmini.org via PayPal.  For your own security, open up a new browser window and type in "https://www.paypal.com", as it is never a good idea to follow a link to paypal.  Select "Personal" and "Payment Owed" as your transaction type and PSMINI will receive the full $15 with no fee being taken out.  Please include your real names and your screen name in the "Message" window when you make your payment to make life easier for the PSMINI worker bees that are handling the money and keeping track of the participants.  If you’d rather pay by check, PM me with a request for the address to send the check to.

Scheduled activities this year will include Lunch on Saturday at Miners Drive-In in Yakima, a Photo Opportunity at the Stonehenge Memorial in Maryhill and a group dinner in the Banquet Room at the ever popular Ayulta Restaurant.  Also returning this year will be the Poker Run with cards given out at stops along the way.

The big blue text above is a link to a downloadable PDF copy of the directions.  It is imperative that each car has a copy of these directions.  We will be traveling in remote areas on this drive; areas with few services, limited road signage and zero mobile phone service.  You may be responsible for getting yourself to the next or final destination if you get separated from the group for any reason.  We will have a few copies with us on Saturday morning.  If you can't print a copy for whatever reason PM us and we will print a copy, put your name on it and bring it Saturday morning.

Final schedule: (please print out directions above)
Saturday, July 21st:

8:30 am- Depart Supermall parking lot in Auburn.  We will meet on the Burlington Coat Factory (not affiliated with Burlington Industries) side of the mall.  You will find a Starbucks and a Chevron and Shell nearby.  We are making a coffee/rest stop an hour after we leave, however you are encouraged to have a full tank of gas when we depart.  We will take the SE Green Valley Road to Highway 169, then turn south and connect with Highway 410 just east of Enumclaw.  When we turn left on to Highway 410 at approximately 9:10 we will pick up a few members that have chosen to meet us there.  This will be a rolling meet-up with no stops.  The members will merge into the line at the rear.

9:30 am- Coffee/rest stop at Wapati Woolies in Greenwater.  At 10:00 am we will continue on 410 to Highway 123 and then take U.S. 12 across White Pass to Yakima.  Highway 123 is now open, however, you can click on the link above to check the latest status of the highway.

12:15 pm- Arrive at Miners Drive In along First Avenue in Yakima.  Eastsiders will probably meet us here.

1:30 pm- Depart Yakima and travel along U.S. 97 to the Maryhill State Park.

3:00 pm- Arrive at Maryhill State Park for a 15 minute rest stop.

3:30 pm- Arrive at Stonehenge Memorial for a photo opportunity.

4:00 pm- Free time.  Visit Maryhill Winery, Waving Tree Winery, check in to your hotel, visit Oregon State Liquor Store in The Dalles for cheap booze.

6:00 pm- Dinner at Ayulta Mexican Restaurant, Goldendale.

Sunday, July 22nd:

9:00 am to 12:00 noon- Maryhill Loops Road Drive

12:00 noon- drive officially ends.  You are free to travel home or join us after lunch to visit some of our favorite wineries in the Lyle area.

Hotel Information:

Host Hotel:
Three Rivers Inn, Biggs, OR  (541) 739-2501 - $59.99 for 1 person; $69.99 for 2 people, queen bed.  2 Queen beds in one room: $89.99.

But wait!  Don't call just yet!  The Three Rivers Inn offers an internet special of $5 off if you ask or $5 off if you are an AAA member. Click the link and visit their website, but you'll need to call to make your reservation. There is no group reservation (as they did not offer our group any sort of special rate the last three years), but it is the "official" hotel of this drive and where most people stayed last year.  The hotel is sort of a mom and pop operation and some participants have had trouble booking a room during off-hours.  Call during bankers hours and you should have a good chance of getting the phone answered and a room booked.  Make sure you write down your confirmation number.  There is a pet fee of $15 regardless of how many nights you are staying.  As of 5/3/12 member "leogetz" reports that they are almost fully booked, probably due to the Earth, Wind and Fire concert at the Maryhill Winery that evening.

(Biggs is 11 miles south of Goldendale, just across the Biggs Bridge from Maryhill State Park, close to Stonehenge and Maryhill Loops Road)

Other Hotel Options:
Quality Inn- Goldendale, WA  (509) 773-5881- $124.99 (rack rate) Queen bed/2 people (up a bit from last year).

The rate at the Quality Inn reflects the fact that it is a slightly nicer property. It is clean, comfortable and acceptable for a night's stay.  This would be our first choice if the Three Rivers Inn is booked.  We have stayed there and can vouch for it. We don't know about the availability.  Note that it is almost double the price of some of the other options.  Pets are not allowed.  This just in- Stephen (SMOG) mentioned he was booking a room because he was attending a car club event in the area.  The desk person then said "we'll give you the car club rate" which is $111 for two people.

Dinty's Market and Motor Inn-
 91571 Biggs-Rufus Hwy., Biggs Junction, OR 97065.
(541) 739-2596.  $45.45 single, $52.52 double (2010 rate).
24-hour market and deli, sandwiches, broasted chicken, Fishing/hunting licenses, lottery, groceries, souvenirs, Tillamook ice cream, espresso, 26-unit motel overlooking the Columbia River.
NU-VU Motel-
Dawn Hobbs, Manager.
91495 Biggs Rufus Hwy, Biggs Junction, OR 97065.
(541)739-2525.  $61.61/2 people, 2 beds (2010 rate).
17-unit motel, smoking and non-smoking rooms, pets allowed
Ponderosa Motel-
775 E. Broadway St.
Goldendale, WA, 98620.
For reservations call 509 773-5842 or email ponderosamotel@gorge.net .
Newly remodeled single, double, and kitchen units. Pets allowed. Close to downtown, Presby Museum, and shops.  28 rooms.
Hillview Motel- 203 Wallace St, Rufus, OR. 541.739.8221.  $65.00 (2010 rate).
Recommended by Bobbe and Pat after the 2010 run.  Also gets good reviews on Trip Advisor.  7 rooms.
Tall Winds Motel- 301 Main Street, Moro OR.  541-565-3519.
Moro is about 20 miles south of the Biggs area.  The picture on the Tall Winds Motel website advertises remodeled rooms starting at $44, so they are definitely your low price leader.  12 rooms.
This scene from This Is Spinal Tap (note the miniature Stonehenge stage prop) appears to have been filmed in an actual room at the Three Rivers Inn, circa 1984.  They've updated it since then, of course, so if you'd like to check out this fine motel in person please join us and bring a MINI or Mini- no motorcycles, BMW's, Subies or Smart cars will be allowed on the Loops Road.
This pilgrimage was inspired by This Is Spinal Tap.  For more history follow the links below to the planning and feedback threads from previous years:
To join us on this drive, reply below and we'll add you to the list!  A final itinerary and schedule will be posted a week before the drive.

I think the dates are listed incorrectly.  Should read the 21st & 22nd of July, or is this a Sunday and Monday Event?

And why should we not call "Just yet" and book a room???

When I booked my room @ Quality Inn it was no problem, then I asked for a downstairs room and they made a change and put me in a downstairs room, so I know they had an upstairs room available too, same rate.

Unfortunately, I have a nephew’s wedding to attend on Sunday. I suppose we could do the Stonehenge and leave Sunday morning? Of course I’d be missing the most fun part of the drive at Maryhill Loops Road. Cry

The wedding is at 3pm in Buckley. I wonder how long it would take me to drive from Maryhill to Buckley on a Sunday? Idea

Maps of Google puts it at 195 miles/4 hours 5 minutes (Goldendale to Buckley, no specific addresses) via 97/12/123/410.  Basically the reverse of the route we are taking down there.  Via I-5/Snoqualmie Pass it's 218 miles/4 hours 2 minutes.  You could make a couple of runs and leave about 10am or so and still make it.  Pack your fancies and change at the church (?) or if it's close enough to your house make a quick stop there.

I'm new to the group, and am trying to convience my husband that we should go.  I haven't been to any event yet and this sounds like fun.  Only problem is we have a special needs dog that needs to always be with us so the dinner (where we could actually meet people) would not be possible.  Hopefully I can talk him into it.  By the way in the fall we help to put on a hill climb up the loops for SOVREN, Society of vintage race car enthusiats

I also think that you could meet several folks at the Stonehenge monument and wherever you plan to stay.

The Alocatelli mini should be a real treat to see!

Please put Steve and me down as tentative. I new issue has cropped up (besides the wedding on Sunday): the rear main seal is leaking on Hapa. Not sure how long it'll remain a slow leak, but I'm weighing my options for a DIY repair. The leak also concerns me for the AMVIV commute in June as well. Ermm

Is there a limit in how many MINIs/Minis can sign up for this?

Sure it's the rear main?  The oil pan gasket is a frequent leaker on these first generation models as is the gasket around the oil pressure sending unit or something like that.  I don't recall reading about rear main seals going bad but that's not to say it can't happen.

The oil pan gasket is a pretty easy DIY; the front end has to go into "service mode" which means the bumper cover, bumper and crush tubes have to come off.  You can put the car up on ramps to do it instead of having to use jack stands.  After that it's a bunch of bolts (drain the oil first) and off comes the pan.  I hear the sending unit gasket is easy to do while you are in there as well.

We've set an upper limit on the number of cars allowed this time but we'll get you in Wink.
