John, thanks. I've already signed up for the tuning tool and notice that Jan does Porsche.

Done with the performance mods right now (but would really like to get bigger turbo's ;) and going to focus on handling. Already talked to Jan re JRC c/o's but they and Motions are just a wee bit pricey. JIC/ Cross is redesigning their 996tt & 997tt c/o's so I waiting to see what their pricing is going to be. As you know, I really love the JIC setup on my Mini.

Still need to get this baby on the track to figure out what I really need. Power level is just awesome, but you can't really appreciate it on the street unless you want to go to JAIL!!!!!!!!

Cheers!

Greg, great news. Please be sure to stop by & say hi. I'll will also try to get over to the area they stage the CCC at. It's right behind the area where everyone stages for the track.

Good decision on making changes to both the front & rear of the car at the same time.

Check on NAM re more info on Jan Tune. With the remote tool, when it's available, you'll be able to flash it back to stock. I've had the tune for over a year with no service/warranty issues. The intercooler can also wait until you decide to do the tune.

Don't worry about C/O. That is, unless you find yourself itching to get to the track ever month ;).

Cheers!

Well.... After some sound advice (thanks to everyone who chipped-in) here's where I am:
1) CCC class on 16 April (Pacific Raceways)
2) Learn the car as is
3) Possibly a tower brace plus rear sways simultaneously
4) Jan Tune and Intercooler AFTER warranty expires
5) Coilovers would be nice - but look a bit pricey - so that would be much later down the road...

I look forward to seeing some folks at Pac Raceway on April 16th (yes Wildfamily - with my CLUBBIE Drive

Martin is right - Bremerton is kind of a drive for most of us, and the track rent is WAAAYYYY cheaper.  Pacific Raceways is working on pricing, though - not as much business as before.  You'll note that the clubs are getting some weekend dates.  Pat

I think the price difference is Pacific Raceways rental cost vs. Bremerton...big difference, but doesn't matter since your not racing on the track anyway. I'd go with PCA on the CCC.

Greg, Onramp is right about the PCA day being cheaper. It's only $55.00 and I think they have a day in March. It's held at Bremerton.

Check out the PCA website for all their requirements and dates. I think the BMW club charges $125.00 for their CCC. Not sure why there is such a price difference between the two clubs. I also think the PCA has their student guide available on line at the web site. http://www.pnwr.org/

Not sure if a helmet is required for the CCC's with BMW or PCA. Maybe Onramp will know. You don't have to run out and buy a helmet. Both clubs have rentals.

Whatever you decide to do, enjoy the car!

Cheers!

I'm a fan of the strut bar, as I like the increased turn in feel.  Yes, stiffening the front does increase understeer, but not so much that can't be controlled with a change in tire pressure.  I installed a bigger rear bar so that I can induce oversteer with the throttle while cornering.  The upper strut bar does make servicing the car a tad more time consuming as you have to remove and replace the bar for a lot of the work.  Not sure about the lower strut system as I haven't added one.

Boomers advice is all good, and he HAS done the research.  I would also mention that PCA does a skills day at Bremerton, and for a lower cost.  Regardless of your choice of the CCC or Skills Day, both classes are recognized by all clubs, including the Alfa Club.  PCA will let you attend a DE without first attending a Skills/CCC, but you won't be able to solo until you attend.  For the BMW club, it is a prerequisite.  As an instructor, it doesn't make any difference to me.  The learning curve is pretty steep either way.  I'm kind of a fan of doing the first DE, then you will have more appreciation the info taught at the Skills/CCC classes.

You are wise to avoid any drivetrain mods until the warranty expires.  While the dealers have looked the other way a bit on mods to Gen 1 cars, they are pretty hard nosed about Gen 2 cars.  I would talk to a service adviser about the mod before spending the bucks - see what they say.

Greg: funny we had a e60 550i sport in the stable till we shuffled.

Didn't mean to imply that a front strut tower brace was "bad". Just that when you stiffen the front end, you often induce understeer unless you make a corresponding change to the rear. Everything with suspension is connected. Bushings, shocks, springs, sways, braces, wheels, tires, rotors, and on and on.

I'm probably in the minority when it comes to changing  or adding Mini/BMW parts. They spent MUCHO DINERO on researching what works. Most modern cars are designed with understeer. It's safer for the average driver. I liked the sport setup and elected to go with a chassis brace rather than stiffing the front end with a strut tower brace. I like the steering response as is. That's after alignment and C/O.

There are many, many people that think differently than I do regarding suspension changes.

Remember, you now have a "puller" vs. a "pusher". (FWD/RWD). Need to factor this in when you think of making changes.

I agree with your thought process: "I was thinking: improve the handling first; learn the car; then add power."

Before making any changes I highly recommend you get to know your car. You can do this by hours of spirited driving or you can go to a CCC and in one day, find out just how your car behaves. Skid pad is one of the best with threshold braking, emergency avoidence, and small autocross.

Check with Mini. I think the JCW cars have a more aggressive alignment. Find out the spec's and then talk to people. A good alignment, and corner balance (if needed) can do wonders with handling and steering response.

Then check your suspension. Do you like the ride, body roll, height, turn in, braking response/behaviour etc. etc.. What compromises will you create and are you willing to live with them based on your use and driving style.

Suspension is one of the most complicated but most rewarding areas of the car to play with. It can be very expensive and some changes may bring about changes you won't like based on your daily use.

Hell, you may already know this, and I apologize if I'm covering things you already know.  Only make one change at a time and live with it a bit. Then make notes of what you like and what you think you can change to better suit your needs.

If you want to talk more, just shoot me a PM. The BMW club has their CCC at Pac. Raceways on 4/16 and you get a chance to go on the track. Again, sorry if this is old news. You could be a experienced track rat and I don't even know it.

Cheers!

I'm going the Blizzak route for winter driving (wouldn't have needed them this year though!). The OEM run-flats are still considered summer/performance tires....
Good idea though!

Keep the run flats (assuming they are of the all weather variety) in the garage for winter use.  Buy yourself some cool aftermarket wheels with some stickies on them for summer (and most of the year around here).

Hey - thanks for all the GREAT information thus far!

Indeed - I am talking about my 2010 Clubman JCW (though you all figured that out :) ). Note: I am coming off a BMW 550i Sport; and I can easily say - I enjoy this car WAY more than that tank. (Fast tank! ... But still a tank none-the-less). I have but 625 miles on the odo of my Clubman - so still much to learn. I haven't even enjoyed full torqe yet! I'm being good about the break-in rules: no full throttle; and all under 4500rmp... or maybe 5000 once in a while; but NO REDLINE. It is such a test of my will-power! :)

I must say I am impressed beyond expectation already with the current handling ability though. I was anticipating a fair amount of understeer on hard cornering (or at least entering); but have felt the car to be quite neutral (seat-of-the-pants meter). I really don't care for (hate) understeer - thus my thought about upping the sway-bars (at least rear). From what I have read on this site - sounds like I will leave the front alone!

I am very surprised to hear that a tower brace would contribute to understeer though! I thought it would help turn-in reactin (i.e. no time/energy in flexing; all input would translate directly to directional change). Boomer - do you have any more detail on why a tower brace would be bad? They do offer it as an option from the factory (which I did not take... as I thought I would add one later).

And - yes - Wildfamily - I would like very much to take my clubbie to the track (nothing serious - just to learn the car). I don't plan on autocrossing or anything; just a bit of playing (we'll see if I get addicted...); and mostly understanding how the car behaves at its limits. I will definitely sign-up for one of the BMW CCCs (hoping Onramp can show me some of that drift-on-exit control stuff!)

A Jan Tune sounds like a great deal; and will line that up for down the road a bit. And probably the intercooler. I was thinking: improve the handling first; learn the car; then add power.

I know I should chage the tires first (yup - I have NOT done that yet). It just kills me to toss expensive tires - and the tire shops don't seem to want to give me anything for them. Where they sit now - they are nicely 'broken-in'... should be worth SOMETHING! :) Does anyone know of an aftermarket for our lovely Dunlop Run-Flats???

I too - look forward to meeting folks at upcoming events!

Thanks again for all the input!

Zephyrgtw, first welcome to the club! Looks like you picked a WINNER, JCW Blk/Blk Clubman! NICE!

My ride is a 07 R56. As you can see from my signature, I've done many mods that pay off big time at the track.

IMHO, there are 3 mods that really pay big dividends.

Intercooler: lowers incoming air temps, bigger bang with Helix and Forge being the best.

Suspension, coilovers make a huge difference in ride and handling. Also lowers the center of gravity, so the car is planted. (Still pushes a bit, but I'm very happy with the handling.)

Check out KW and JIC/Cross. I went with the JIC/Cross for the independant ride height adjustment without reducing shock travel.

Finally a tune. RMW/Jan has found the "E ticket" for these cars. Check out NAM. There is a guy with a R56 JCW that's posting some HUGE #'s.

There are plenty of mods you can do but it all depends on your use and budget. You already have one of the best mods I had to make: BRAKES! You will love your JCW brakes. I've used the OEM pads and there good but this year I'm putting on Carbotech XP12 front and XP10 rear in hopes of improving an already good system.

While I have a Riss Racing Catted/Coated Downpipe, I'm not sure I'd recommend this mod. It throws a P0420 code and is a HUGE PITA. Doesn't affect performance, just have to reset it all the time.

Front strut tower brace? If you have the brace leave it. Not sure I'd want to add one since it will only contribute to understeer and I haven't seen evidence of mushrooming on the R56.

Sways? You have a JCW suspension and I'm not sure of the bar sizes but why do you want to change these? With C/O you can dial this baby in where I think you'll be very happy.

Catback? I have the Milltek. Your JCW exhuast is pretty sweet already. Give it time to break in and the sound will improve. Airflow is good, so why waste the money!

Airbox? Yours is fine. Might want to consider a high flow filter but that's it.

Congrats on the car. I'm sure you'll love it.

The one thing I'd do is the RMW tune. Jan now has a remote tuning tool that will let you bring the tune back to stock. Check out NAM for more info.

Live with the car a bit. Take it to a Car Control Clinic and find out it's inherent handling characteristic. Then start to mod it if you decide you need to change something.

Suspension (including tires),  brakes, then POWER! That's the ticket!

Hope to meet you at an event in the future.

Cheers!

John...them be fightin' words in our house. I'm not allowed to use the words "Track" and "Clubman" in the same sentance! LOL I will say though that the Clubman "S" could use some stiffer springs/lowering up front to keep the front end on the pavement under hard acceleration. The torque steer is pretty crazy when you launch off the line. A set of nice coilovers and a 1" drop would do the trick (hint, hint Anne).

Something else Greg when it comes to swaybars there are very few here that have had a CLUBMAN on the track. I would ask  Martin and Anne Wild about the handling of there Clubman before running out and changing sway bars or other suspension parts. That would be Wildfamily and Cocoa Puff respectively.

Don I believe and I am only guessing here but it does say 2010 JCW in the subject line. Maybe Greg owns a 2010?

Greg, Boomer (Greg) is a good one to get ahold of on second gens and also Kris but I am not sure of his sign on, there are about 4 Guys here that have moded the tubo engines under warrenty with no problems. And as I mentioned Boomer is a good source for Gen 2 mods. I will find the tuning that we did this last summer and link it so you can kind of see who is moding the gen 2s.

John

n1tro is one

The big thing with the new engine the 1.6 Prince is the amount of torque it is producing. Thumbs Up Keep in mind that this is a Puegeot  engine at its roots.

I'll add the ALTA PSRS to your list to tighten up steering response.

Past that, I bet you don't wait until the warranty expires to start messing under the hood.

Greg,

What year is your JCW?  I would suggest you talk with someone like onramp (Pat) who has a JCW and has dealt with the same questions as you are now.

I agree with John that the JCW is good stuff but it can be improved on and that improvement depends on the generation of your MINI.

What exactly are you looking for, i.e., better handling, more power or torgue, etc.

I know this does not help much but perhaps it will give you a place from which to start planning.

Greg,

Jan does both gen1 and gen2 Mini's

Bigger intercooler
Header
Catback

And of course suspension but for the most part your JCW stuff is not bad at all.

Does anyone have experience/suggestions for modifications on the factory JCW's?

I've seen quite a few posts on earlier models, but am not sure what translates to the latest cars.

I don't want to go too big (yet); and I don't want to void my warranty.

Considering:
- Tower Brace (is the OEM brace good? Or do I really want/need one with pre-tension?)
- Sway Bars (Rear only? Both Front & Rear?)
- Anything else that should be top of the list (keeping the warranty in mind Smile)?

Thanks in advance for any advice.

Greg
