I'm in the market for a new GPS. In my old club everyone kind of standardized on the Nuvis so we could sync up route files for runs.

If there is a favorite within the club I may just get one of those. Otherwise I'll be getting a new Nuvi.

Thanks!

Ah, the Nuvi analog version.  Doesn't say a word when you make a wrong turn.
5 race wins, 2 in the rain. 2nd in ICSCC G Production Championship 2005 and 2006. Now I'm just gonna drive the MINI.

Who is this Thomas Guide fella? The last DeLorme I bought took 4xAA batteries and sent me into the middle of Memphis TN. When your passenger, who grew up and lives in South Philly, says "we shouldn't be here." you get the hell out.

LOL  Good one, Jack!

P.S.  I've had a Nuvi GPS for a couple of years now, but it's never been out of it's box, so I'm still mostly lost.

P.P.S.  Let's not forget that the Thomas Guide fella wins most of the road rallyes around these parts. Clap

Do they make a Thomas Guide that is printed in Vietnamese?  My co-pilot MIGHT be able to read that map, otherwise she needs a tracking device to find her car in a parking lot!

John - Don't know about solar power - I know it doesn't have a mute button....

Stephen - No owners manual included - all trial and error...

Jack:  I have the foreign model, no English Manual and not remotely intuitive.  I have discovered that if I try to figure it out intuitively I appear to be on a Public Works Road Crew digging holes for myselfSmile

Getting lost with that model has been a good adventure and have discovered many things that the most direct route would not have shown me.

Jack does it work when used in conjunction with a bottle of favorite wine?

John - have not tried that - I'll give it a shot if I ever figure out what my favorite wine is.   Problem does not seem to be getting it to work - more like getting it not to work when I know where I'm going and a general idea of how to get there....

I use an iPhone 4 with Navigon software. It mounts on an Arkon beanbag mount that works well in almost any car.

I have used that in a pinch if I change cars and forget to put the Nuvi into the one I am driving.  Not as good as a satellite system.  The cell phone towers are not out in the sticks as frequently as are satellites overhead.  Unless of course you are using a Sat phone.

Those bean bag mounts are pretty cool because you can mount any electronic device to them, like radar detector, video camera, etc.

I have a Garmin Nuvi as well. Not a top of the line model but it does the job and doesn't take up too much of the windscreen space, which is in short supply on a MINI.
I tried a Tomtom before but returned it - it had some nice features, but the software seemed not polished compared to the Nuvi.

John: Now that looks like a boring Saturday Night unless all you had in mind was drivingWink

Kurt:  I too have a "Not the top of the line Nuvi" and it works fine.  When I went into the store looking for them I noticed that the Garmin had the easiest, most intuitive user interface, a choice of voices AND a mute toggle.  The feature I use the most on it is the speedometer feature since our MINI's have crappy speedo's and I change tire diameters on occasion.

Actually, with the Navigon software you don't need cell reception to get a GPS location lock - the iPhone's GPS chip takes care of that and maps for the lower 48 states, Alaska, Hawaii, and Canada are loaded into the phone's memory. I've used it around Rainier where AT&T has no service whatsoever and it's worked very well.
