My turn!

I knew MINI would be good in the snow, but didn't know how good.  I have the stock run flat all weather tires.  The turn is really good (I think stiff side walls of the run flats help here), very little under-steer.  Acceleration up hill is very poor.  I have to add though, the tires had 5 hpde events on them, that could be the reason :)

I have some more footage but I haven't processed them yet.  Annoyingly my GoPro didn't work..

And some pics:

Nice... :-)  Did you pull the handbrake or did the car naturally do this when you lifted?

Next time call me so I can come out and play with you as well!! I don't know any parking lots where I could try this without getting in trouble!

Yes did it with the hand brake (you can see the rears locking at around 0:07).  I did it at our office's parking lot.  I can call you next time, but I seriously have no idea if I would get into trouble..

Would a cop do anything about this?  It is the empty side of the parking lot, no traffic nothing.

I remember having fun like that in a VW Bug . . . I wasn't driving, but it was fun!  Donuts in the snow!

I don't think a cop would care if it's on private property and you have some sort of proof that you are not trespassing?
Even better if it's off the beaten path. :)

I did a couple parking brake slides on a deserted corner of a parking lot on the way home earlier today. Kids loved it, wife was scared and yelling at me to stop. Is there some sort of pill I could give her to make her come over to the other side? :-)

I don't know any pill :)  Adria did some slides too (with me helping a little).  So she's cool when I do it as well.  We also did this with her Subaru Impreza yesterday.  That car had much better acceleration but a lot more understeer.

Nicely done. I went out in the BMW and got the back end out a few times with DSC off. Wish I had a large parking lot to play in, I'd love to practice my drifting technique.

Kurt, maybe you should get your wife to go to the ladies' autocross out at Bremerton in 2012.

That is never going to happen unless someone can tell me which pill will get her interested in anything 'car.'

She drives a Prius for ___'s sake. And thinks it's cute.

Ah. My wife has expressed interest in potentially doing something like a car control clinic down the road, but she drives a Mini and likes blasting through corners well above the advisory speed limit.

I think showing her lots of Top Gear did the trick as she didn't even own a car when we began dating 6 years ago.

I will keep trying. It's going to be a long journey.
The other day I let her drive (the Prius-she won't drive the MINI). We were going about 45mph-50mph in the right lane of the freeway...for miles. There was no traffic in the left lane, but she wouldn't move over because she doesn't like changing lanes. Disapprove

Hey, it's the same for guys. Wife's cousin and her husband were visiting the other day, he saw a sexy MINI in the garage and didn't even look at it.

Kurt, no pills necessary.  She obviously is a safety conscious person so explain to her how much more safe she would be by taking a class that shows her what to do when the car slides?  Snow and ice are great places to start the learning curve because speed is not much of a facor but sliding isBig smile, good luck.

There are several words that come to mind...  The best advice would be to get real snow tires!  My driveway is much steeper than that hill and I drive out.  I leave the car in the garage at night rather than up on our street.

I really liked the part when the couple was going to put chains on the rear wheels of a Carolla (a front wheel drive car). After that I was picturing them trying to drive up the hill again after getting them on the back tires and then wondering why it still isn't working.

People that do this should have their drivers license revoked.

LOL, A big +1 to that thought!!  Holding those chains out like they had absolutely no clue about how they were to be applied and apparently not which wheels!  There is the thought that if they go on all 4 then the back will stay behind you...

Wow. That was painful to watch. The cars that slid the most, it was obvious that the drivers made no attempt to modulate power...

Oh yeah- I have a bunch of neighbors from south INDIA and we live on a steep hill- they are doing just fine, so this is a skill that can be learned, people!

I was going to same the same.   Looked at that MINI.  The tires just start spinning immediately, no modulation.

OK I put together some other pieces.  Since my GoPro didn't work, I don't have any in-car footage unfortunately.

I was doing something similar in a vacant Fred Meyer parking lot just before they opened. I have Blizzaks on the car though and turned DSC off. A sheriff was watching me from the next parking lot and I waved at him.

That is really the way to learn how your car handlesThumbs Up

What did the Sheriff do?  I might have asked him if that was OK to do and tell him how you wanted to be prepared for what might happen on the street just to get his reaction.

Kurt, your wife and mine apparently have more in common than just genetics!  Lee was pretty quiet when we took those few lapse in the rain around The Ridge's trackBig smile, although it did give her a bit more confidence in my driving abilities as well as the cars abilities.

Classic Audi driving fail from the 2010 storms. Queen Anne Hill aka Mount Counterbalance should probably only be attempted on a snowmobile.
