Even on ice a really good set of studless tires are better than studded. Search YouTube for the tire rack comparison of the two.

I used to always have studded tires when living in eastern Washington but don't see the necessity here. But I do put on good snow tires. Would rather drive on those during the winter on a dry day and be prepared for the snowpocalypse. Bad Kitty and my former coopers all did very well in the snow as long as I drove according to the conditions!

So I took the MINI out today just to go see how it'd do (and how I'd do) with this much snow.

No problems, no hick-ups.  Traction control works nicely with very gentle throttle input.  I still think I can get stuck in a steep hill, but other than that the car is very drive-able.  Although since there is a little bit more snow on the ground today, the ground clearance is starting to become a problem.

Well went out and ran around with the DWS and they did real good, but it is coming down to hard and by to night it will be bad with the drifts so I broke down and installed the winter shoes.

Again, this is the best car I have ever driven in the snow.  The 175-65- R15's cut like a knife through snow and slush and the power curve is perfect- I have tried to break traction many times today and it's virtually impossible.  Stopping is also very good.

There's lots of people out walking today- I got several surprised looks for taking a MINI out in this weather.  Maybe it will be a car they will consider now.

I only broke traction during this snowstorm when flooring it on 520 at 45 mph. It took a kickdown to 3rd at full throttle to light up the TCS light.

I was freakin' impressed by the performance of the car with the skinny 175/65-15 Blizzaks. This is the best front wheel drive car I've ever driven in the snow.

My Blizzaks amaze me every time. The only times I have felt stuck was this morning, when I drove uphill into 6 inches of fresh snow with a layer of ice in the middle, and 2 days ago, going up a steep hill when there was a very slick layer of water over about an inch of ice. I managed to get out of both situations with relative ease.

Traction conditions appeared to be fairly good, so I took the Prius out for a spin tonight to see how it performed...I couldn't get it back up the hill. The traction control cuts power and prevents me from 'powering out' of places - and it can't be disabled except by a factory command that requires the car to be turned off and back on again.

Do you have a Gen 2 or a Gen 3 Prius? Supposedly, the Gen 3 doesn't have the crazily intrusive traction control system that the Gen 2's cursed with.

It is a Gen2 and therefore useless in the snow.
My wife and I had a discussion about good snow cars with room for 5 passengers.
The Countryman came up as an option, but not for her-- she wanted me to sell my R53 Cooper S and replace it with a Countryman. I would love to have one in the family, but not if it means selling CORNERS!

Im here to say that the Mini Coupe is awesome in the snow and ice. And the spoiler comes up ice on it or not. It was sitting out a good portion of the day yesterday and just coated in ice and snow. I had ice hanging 4 inches off the mirrors. The poor car looks like it's been through a war. It's going to take a week of Sundays to get this car clean again.

Anyway for anyone wondering about how the spoiler works in inclement weather. PERFECT!!

I'll be glad when this crap is gone. Lost power at 8 am yesterday at home. Still without it today and it may be a few more days before we get it back. And to make things worse the weather dudes are now calling for a windstorm late tonight and Saturday morning. Great that's all we need. They sure blew it on the ice storm.

Had to come to work for internet service. I lost a bunch of trees. I went home yesterday early and tried to knock as much ice off the trees as I could but I have a couple in the backyard that are split in two. Not sure how the rest will fair. But the house is in good shape with no damage of any kind so I'm blessed in that regard.

And I had such promise for a mild winter. It was a beautiful winter until Wednesday. Yikes.

I don't know exactly how the spoiler operates mechanically but I would guess that it would not be good for it to have any pressure (like ice) pushing down on it while it is trying to extend up. I also would think that it would damage the paint a little bit.

If it was me I would want to put in an override switch to make it so it doesn't extend up in weather like this. But that is just me.

I went and tried my Mini and my Alpin PA3s in real snow for the first time on Thursday, and it did great on the street where the snow is mostly flat. I saw a lot of cars get stuck on the moderate slope of my street, but the Mini's traction control handled that well. It's interesting to watch the little yellow light flash on as you drive around the slush and snow. I suppose if you could train yourself to drive so the light never come on, you'd be a pretty decent snow driver.

So then I went to a coffee shop 4 blocks away -- I usually just walk there -- and drove the car up on a 9" or so berm by the curb. Because one of the issues with snow is that if you park next to the berms instead of on them, you stick out in the lane and somebody driving by will hit you. Of course in the winter they slide into parked cars anyway, but it's worse if you aren't close to the curb.

As you would guess, I got stuck on the berm. More or less high centered on the snow. I tried a bit to dig it out but it was too much work. I just had my coffee and walked home, then came back and got the car yesterday after the rain and warm weather cleared the snow a bit.

So my little experiment just verified to me that I probably wouldn't be happy if I lowered the car at all. I like the idea of getting coilovers but I need to be able to drive it, and between the potholes and the snow I can't afford to go any lower. Even coilovers that drop it 0.8 or 0.75" would be more clearance than I want to give up. Probably just upgrade my struts and keep the stock springs so the height doesn't change.

This is the direction I am going toward because I cannot afford to give up the ride height, AND they soften the harsh ride a bit.

There is another option of using Bilstein HD shocks/struts.  They actually will raise the vehicle, according to all the Posts I have read on NAM  http://www.northamericanmotoring.com/forums/suspension/177362-anyone-got-bilstein-shocks-on-their-r56-yet.html
